Like most mothers in this country, I take it for granted that I can feed and clothe my two young children. But there are many people in the world who aren't so lucky.
I believe strongly that if there is a way of showing compassion for people, and the environment, then we should do it.
And that's why I created Butter Thieves - to bring you beautiful fair-trade, organic and ethical children's clothing that makes a real difference to the lives of those less fortunate than us.
Why should I choose fair trade?
When you buy a certified fair trade product, you can be certain that the producers are getting a fairer deal. For instance, they receive wages in line with, or above, their national average, and all of them, whether male of female, should receive equal pay.
You can also be sure that:
- child labour is not used
- producers work reasonable hours.
- chemicals that can harm producers as well as the environment are not used
- a percentage is paid up front to help prevent producers incurring debts
- as revenue is generally generated locally, producers and their families are more likely to have access to healthcare and education
All fair trade products available through Butter Thieves carry certification from either The Fair Trade Foundation or The British Association For Fair Trade Shops.
Why should I choose organic?
Buying organic cotton products makes a huge difference to the world.
Cotton is a heavily sprayed crop. In fact, it accounts for 20% of the world's agricultural pesticide usage. But growing cotton organically protects the health of the cotton producers, wildlife and the environment from a deadly toxic soup.
Other benefits are:
- organic cotton is softer to the touch as the fibres are not broken down by chemicals or processing
- organic cotton is less likely to trigger allergies as chemicals, such as formaldehyde, are absent
- organic cotton is generally ethically sourced with the welfare of producers and their families in mind
All organic products available through Butter Thieves are certified by Skal, Demeter or AGRECO, and meeting the standards and criteria set respectively.
To you, buying fair trade and organic means peace of mind. To the producers and the environment it means a lot more.
Thank you for your interest in Butter Thieves. |
